Safety Codes
- The Safety Codes Act in Alberta mandates that certain construction, renovation, and installation work must comply with provincial safety codes.
- The Summer Village requires safety codes permits for building, electrical, plumbing, sewage, and gas work.
For development work, Val Quentin also requires development permits (in addition to safety codes permits) for things such as construction, excavation, demolition, changes of building use, well digging, water cistern installation, among others.
Superior Safety Codes provides permit issuance and inspection services for multiple disciplines in Alberta.

Permit Process & Inspections — What to Expect
Here’s a general flow of how permitting and inspections work, applicable to Val Quentin under Alberta’s system:
Step |
Description |
Determine if permit is needed |
Before beginning work, check whether your project falls under disciplines regulated by the Safety Codes Act. Many alterations, installations, demolitions, and structural changes require permits. |
Apply for permit |
Submit plans, drawings, specifications, application forms, and required fees to Superior Safety Codes Inc. |
Permit review & issuance |
The application is reviewed for compliance with the applicable codes and standards. If approved, the permit is issued. |
Inspection(s) |
As work progresses, certified Safety Codes Officers inspect the work at various stages to ensure compliance with the codes. |
Address deficiencies |
If an inspection identifies issues, corrections must be made and a re-inspection requested. |
Completion / final approval |
Once all required inspections are passed and any conditions are met, you receive final approval or occupancy permission (if applicable). |
Variances |
In some cases, you may apply for a variance (i.e. alternate solution) from a prescriptive code requirement, subject to review and approval. |
Stop work & enforcement |
If work proceeds without a permit or violates the codes, a Safety Codes Officer may issue stop-work orders or other enforcement actions. |
Key Tips & Requirements for Val Quentin Residents / Builders
- Always obtain necessary development permits from Val Quentin Development Officer and safety codes permits before starting work.
- Make sure the work is staged so inspections can occur at required points (e.g. before covering up framing, wiring, plumbing, etc.).
- Ensure the site is accessible and safe for inspectors, and that permit documents and drawings are available onsite.
- Request inspections as required (timing depends on your permit terms).
- Be prepared to correct any deficiencies flagged during inspections.
- For non-standard or alternate design solutions, a variance may be needed.
