Lake Stewardship
Protecting the Health of Lac Ste. Anne
The Summer Village of Val Quentin is committed to preserving the long-term health of Lac Ste. Anne through responsible development, water quality protection, and community stewardship.
Our goal is to help ensure a clean, healthy lake for recreation, wildlife, and future generations.
Our Stewardship Focus
-
Water Quality: 100% of properties are required to connect to the regional sewer system to prevent nutrients from entering the lake.
-
Healthy Shorelines: New developments must include at least a 6-metre environmental reserve buffer to protect sensitive shoreline habitat. Residents are encouraged to maintain or restore native vegetation along the water’s edge.
-
Runoff Reduction: Proper drainage, naturalized ditches, and rain barrels help keep pollutants out of the lake.
-
Erosion Control: Natural shoreline stabilization (native plantings, coir logs, willow staking) is preferred over hard armouring or retaining walls.
-
Invasive Species Prevention: Residents and boaters are reminded to Clean, Drain, and Dry all watercraft and gear before entering the lake.
-
Community Partnerships: Val Quentin works with LILSA (Lake Isle & Lac Ste. Anne Watershed Society), NSWA, and Lac Ste. Anne County to monitor water quality, restore habitat, and promote sustainable practices.
What Residents Can Do
Be a Lake Steward!
-
Keep a 10-metre natural buffer of grasses, shrubs, and native plants along your shoreline.
-
Avoid fertilizers and pesticides within 30 m of the lake.
-
Direct roof runoff and sump discharge away from the lake.
-
Pick up pet waste — it adds nutrients to the water.
-
Maintain your sewer connection in good working order.
-
Report algae blooms or invasive plants to the Village Office or LILSA.
Working Together
By following these simple actions, residents help reduce algae blooms, protect fish and bird habitat, and keep Lac Ste. Anne safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Key Organizations & Structures

Dock & Mooring Standards
The Disturbance Standard sets the maximum acceptable footprint for temporary seasonal docks, temporary seasonal boat lifts and associated mooring structures for personal recreational purposes on the beds and shores of Alberta’s recreational lakes and rivers that are public land owned by the Crown. It creates a general permission for most waterfront, semi-waterfront and municipal dock owners and eliminates the need for them to apply for an authorization if they abide by the standards.
A healthy lake starts with each of us — let’s protect what we love.
