ATIA/POPA Information/Privacy Acts
Access to Information and Protection of Privacy
The Access to Information Act (ATIA) and the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) are provincial statutes that establish the public’s right of access to records and personal information held by public bodies, while also governing the collection, use, disclosure, and protection of personal information.
Effective June 11, 2025, these Acts replaced the former Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP).
Access to Information Requests
Records held by the Summer Village of Val Quentin may be available upon request under Alberta’s Access to Information Act (ATIA), subject to legislative requirements and exceptions. For information on making a request, contact cao@valquentin.ca
Individuals wishing to request access to records under the ATIA must complete and submit an Access to Information Request Form.
Requests are generally processed within 30 business days of receipt. Applicants may be required to provide government-issued photo identification prior to the release of records.
Fees
There is no fee for individuals requesting access to their own personal information. However, photocopying charges may apply at a rate of $0.50 per page.
For requests involving general records or information, the following fees apply:
- An initial application fee of $25.00; and
- $25.00 per hour for the time required to locate, retrieve, prepare, and process records for disclosure.
If you are uncertain whether your request falls under the ATIA, please contact us at cao@valquentin for assistance.
Applicants are encouraged to contact the municipality prior to submitting an Access to Information Request Form. We may be able to:
- Advise whether the requested information is publicly available and can be accessed without submitting a formal request; or
- Assist in clarifying the scope of the request, which may help reduce processing time and associated costs.
Property Information Requests
Registered property owners may access information relating to their own property without submitting an Access to Information Request.
Individuals who are not the registered property owner must provide written authorization from the registered owner before property information can be released.
